Embedded Vortices and Their Interactions at Electroweak Crossover
نویسنده
چکیده
We study properties of Z–vortices in the crossover region of the 3D SU(2) Higgs model. Correlators of the vortex currents with gauge field energy and Higgs field squared (“quantum vortex profile”) reveal a structure that can be compared with a classical vortex. We define a core size and a penetration depth from the vortex profile. Z–vortices are found to interact with each other analogously to Abrikosov vortices in a type–I superconductor. * Presented by the first author at the workshop ”Lattice fermions and structure of the vacuum”, 5-9 Oct. 1999, Dubna, Russia.

Z–Vortex Percolation in the Electroweak Crossover Region
We study the percolation properties of embedded topological defects, Z–vortices, and the occurrence of the corresponding Nambu monopoles in the electroweak theory for a Higgs mass MH ≈ 100 GeV, near to the crossover temperature. Although there is no phase transition anymore at such strong selfcoupling, we observe that the Z–vortices still exhibit a percolation transition that has been found rec...
متن کاملDynamics of Topological Defects in Electroweak Theory
Embedded defects proposed long ago (Z–vortices and Nambu monopoles) have been successfully searched for in 3D equilibrium lattice studies within the standard model near the electroweak phase transition and the crossover (which follows it for realistic Higgs mass). Gauge independent lattice–vortex operators are proposed. Vortex condensation (percolation) is found to characterize the high–tempera...
متن کاملEmbedded Topological Defects in Electroweak Theory: From Percolating Networks to Sphalerons
New defects (Z-vortices and Nambu monopoles) are found to become thermodynamically relevant for the broken phase near to the (weakly first order) electroweak phase transition, and below the crossover for higher Higgs mass. The symmetric phase is characterized by vortex condensation (percolation). The percolation transition persists in the crossover region. The quasiclassical nature of the vorti...

The standard model for the electroweak interactions is known 1,2,3,4 to contain vortex solutions that are the usual Nielsen-Olesen U(1) vortices 5 embedded in the larger electroweak symmetry group SU(2) × U(1). After briefly describing these vortex solutions, I will discuss their stability and argue that the presence of bound states can stabilize them. Then I will draw an intimate connection be...
متن کاملMagnetic Monopoles and Vortices in the Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions
These lectures start with an elementary introduction to the subject of magnetic monopoles which should be accesible from any physics background. In the Weinberg-Salam model of electroweak interactions, magnetic monopoles appear at the ends of a type of non-topological vortices called electroweak strings. These will also be discussed, as well as recent simulations of their formation during a pha...
